Modern dating is no picnic. And it’s certainly no Nora Ephron movie. So what is<\/em> it? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It’s like a mini-game,” said Alisa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It’s literally psychological torture,” said Brandy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It’s just a way to increase your social capital,” said Val.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One thing’s for sure: we’re all a little obsessed with it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe this obsession is all society’s<\/em> fault, or maybe it’s our own fault because we’re just looking for a distraction from global warming and late stage capitalism. Or maybe Plato was right, and we are<\/em> all half humans roaming around the Earth looking for our Soulmates. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Regardless of the reason, dating is here to stay. “And all we can really do is try to dismantle some of the structures in place and try to make dating a little more equitable,” said Roberson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Upon writing this article, I’m more convinced than ever that love and romance and dating are important and smart things to think and write about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A journalist once asked Nora Ephron why she only wrote about relationships and she responded: \u201cIs there something else?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I asked Roberson the same question. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere\u2019s hanging out with your homies,” said Roberson. “There\u2019s doing work that\u2019s meaningful to you. There\u2019s helping other people… and there\u2019s love. There really isn\u2019t much else.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
