{"id":12,"date":"2025-04-16T17:15:51","date_gmt":"2025-04-16T17:15:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ascjcapstone.com\/spring-2025\/cjmorgan\/?page_id=12"},"modified":"2025-05-07T03:45:26","modified_gmt":"2025-05-07T03:45:26","slug":"home","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/ascjcapstone.com\/spring-2025\/cjmorgan\/","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-981319bf628f35c3e4e72858aa7b715f\" style=\"background-color:#ffffffcf;margin-top:0;margin-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);margin-bottom:0;margin-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small)\">It was 2017, and I received the most majestic stuffed animal of all time \u2013 a 48-inch tall giraffe whose big brown eyes made me feel like my war was over after being wheeled out of Cohen\u2019s Children\u2019s Medical Center in Queens, New York.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-251a603c3ded38c40fa3dcf9c2f90b98\" style=\"background-color:#ffffffcf;margin-top:0;margin-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);margin-bottom:0;margin-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small)\">I was 14 and had just gotten a <span id=\"pneumonectomy\"><span class=\"bBlocksTextUnderline\">pneumonectomy<\/span><\/span> of my right lung a week earlier. Unfortunately for me, taking out my entire right lung was the only way to remove the carcinoid tumor that had been growing there. I never really named him, but I felt more comforted by his presence when I went to the hospital lobby. To this day, he still resides in my childhood home living room, where I see him every time I\u2019m home for the holidays.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-50cd9a21b2249faa2f329151a2c73cd7\" style=\"background-color:#ffffffcf;margin-top:0;margin-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);margin-bottom:0;margin-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small)\">At 22, there are 10 or so stuffed animals scattered across my bed and nightstands. Just like that ginormous giraffe plush helped me at 14, when I find myself waking up in the middle of the night drenched in sweat because the large U-shaped scar on my back is pulsing profusely and won\u2019t stop no matter how many <span id=\"painkillers\"><span class=\"bBlocksTextUnderline\">painkillers<\/span><\/span> I take, the only thing that calms me down is holding my stuffed animals. I\u2019ll save you all the nitty-gritty details of my story, but to summarize, I was diagnosed with <span id=\"carcinoid\"><span class=\"bBlocksTextUnderline\">carcinoid<\/span><\/span> cancer at the age of 14, which was localized in my lung. I then went through two major surgeries, flatlined during one of my <span id=\"bronchoscopies\"><span class=\"bBlocksTextUnderline\">bronchoscopies<\/span><\/span>, relapsed at the age of 15, and have since then been battling what my oncologist likes to call a parasite because cancer is very slow-growing so with the help of daily <span id=\"chemotherapy\"><span class=\"bBlocksTextUnderline\">chemotherapy<\/span><\/span> pills and monthly injections I function as normally as everyone else but get a jaw-dropping reaction every once in a while when I drop the \u201cI have cancer\u201d line on people.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-f7d9a46a53476294a4098a91e0dda06b\" style=\"background-color:#ffffffcf;margin-top:0;margin-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);margin-bottom:0;margin-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small)\">Enough about me and my missing lung. What I want to discuss is how, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/topics\/children\/cancer-psychological-impact\">American Psychological Association<\/a>, childhood cancer survivors are inevitably doomed as it was found that we are left with a higher risk of <span id=\"anxiety\"><span class=\"bBlocksTextUnderline\">anxiety<\/span><\/span>, stress, post-traumatic stress disorder (<span id=\"PTSD\"><span class=\"bBlocksTextUnderline\">PTSD<\/span><\/span>), <span id=\"depression\"><span class=\"bBlocksTextUnderline\">depression<\/span><\/span>, and, well, you get the gist.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-d270291c989b5d3eb79d01fcb6cf8e3e\" style=\"background-color:#ffffffcf;margin-top:0;margin-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);margin-bottom:0;margin-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small)\">Now thats <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acco.org\/us-childhood-cancer-statistics\/\">15,780<\/a> estimated children a year who are diagnosed with childhood cancer within the U.S. and 300,000 children globally. Each and everyone of those children are faced with an increased risk for mental health disorders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-501b9cceeed1dcb854b1f7f984c40523\" style=\"background-color:#ffffffcf;margin-top:0;margin-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);margin-bottom:0;margin-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small)\"><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/pan.13573\">Dr. Tiina Isok\u00e4\u00e4nt\u00e4 and Dr. Satu M\u00e4kel\u00e4<\/a>, who both specialize in pediatric medical trauma, say that children have to be taught resilience by healthcare providers such as therapists as emotional healing can\u2019t be left to luck when what\u2019s at stake is psychiatric disorders, depressive symptoms, and disruptive behavior.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-3eb055f117e02925b87d23fd951ed14a\" style=\"background-color:#ffffffcf;margin-top:0;margin-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);margin-bottom:0;margin-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small)\">This story isn\u2019t meant to be a sob story because, trust me, that is the last thing a childhood cancer patient or survivor wants. What we want is to see real growth in mental health resources for childhood cancer patients before and after treatment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-2cfaed8b740394da2e9b9d3f45324a07\" style=\"background-color:#ffffffcf;margin-top:0;margin-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);margin-bottom:0;margin-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small)\">Three survivors joined me to share stories of their childhood cancer experience and how their mental health declined. Their experiences and resilience brought tears to my eyes. You might want to grab some tissues.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-7a63ae2a38ec5f589d27aa6d03449968\" style=\"background-color:#ffffffcf;margin-top:0;margin-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);margin-bottom:0;margin-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small)\">Lili Ignon was diagnosed with stage 2B <span class=\"bBlocksTextUnderline\"><span id=\"Hodgkin\">Hodgkin<\/span>&#8216;s<\/span> lymphoma at age 13.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-493a78dc367aa227abb8e20c69bceee4\" style=\"background-color:#ffffffcf;margin-top:0;margin-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);margin-bottom:0;margin-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small)\">\u201cI had noticed a lump above my collarbone, and I kind of ignored it for a couple of months. Then I told my mom about it, and she said we should go see a doctor just in case. My primary care physician told me it was nothing to worry about, but my mom did not believe him \u2014 mama\u2019s intuition. But then, I escaped to the bathroom and broke down crying. But the second I went out of that room, I never shed another tear. I never allowed myself to show any kind of emotion, especially in front of my parents. I didn\u2019t want them to see that. So I basically blocked out everything when I was in treatment,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-029bac453130952e8a272cad4715cd83\" style=\"background-color:#ffffffcf;margin-top:0;margin-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);margin-bottom:0;margin-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small)\">Ignon used the blocking of emotions as a defense mechanism. Although she wasn\u2019t allowing herself to feel emotionally for the sake of her family, she had internal struggles while going through treatment \u2014 the biggest one having to do with the loss of her hair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-b9afcfc3895632dd40e558e9ef7c0b35\" style=\"background-color:#ffffffcf;margin-top:0;margin-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);margin-bottom:0;margin-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small)\">\u201cI was clinging to my hair for dear life,\u201d she said. \u201cThat was my one connection to normalcy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-f6821e31d664bde87f06e2bbff28d326\" style=\"background-color:#ffffffcf;margin-top:0;margin-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);margin-bottom:0;margin-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small)\">For Ignon, her thinning hair symbolized a grasp on life before cancer\u2014a small but defiant act of holding on when everything else felt out of her control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-e4efcc7f2fb266f5a759614c27e5c870\" style=\"background-color:#ffffffcf;margin-top:0;margin-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);margin-bottom:0;margin-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small)\">While going through treatment, Ignon was in eighth grade, and kids would tease her for being absent all the time as she chose to keep her diagnosis private. She struggled with wanting to tell her bullies to stop the teasing but chose to ignore it \u2014 until she was in remission at the beginning of her freshman year of high school. When she confronted \u201cthis one kid Colin\u201d to let him know that she had cancer, her bully\u2019s face turned white. Ignon got her justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-4c409302e940b8c62071a0062ba022de\" style=\"background-color:#ffffffcf;margin-top:0;margin-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);margin-bottom:0;margin-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small)\">During her remission in high school, her guidance counselor gave her a laminated pass that she could wave to the teacher to get out of class. Although any high schooler would see a get-out-of-class free pass as a dream, Ignon used it to escape to the bathroom \u2014 where she\u2019d have <span class=\"bBlocksTextUnderline\"><span id=\"panic\">panic<\/span><\/span> attacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-a341365eafb174a0c94938c4884b072c\" style=\"background-color:#ffffffcf;margin-top:0;margin-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);margin-bottom:0;margin-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small)\">\u201cAfter my first time, when I finished treatment, that\u2019s when I started experiencing PTSD, and that was in the form of panic attacks. Anytime anyone mentioned the word cancer or anything related, I would have a panic attack,\u201d she said. \u201cIt gradually got better, but for that first year after, I think I had a panic attack like maybe three times a week.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-b9180d430739dbe01af8b352d0e6b467\" style=\"background-color:#ffffffcf;margin-top:0;margin-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);margin-bottom:0;margin-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small)\">Remember how I said war is never really over for a childhood cancer patient? In April of Ignon\u2019s senior year of high school, she was diagnosed again after another lump appeared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-9f1b9173ec4ec969991c0a6598ee14eb\" style=\"background-color:#ffffffcf;margin-top:0;margin-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);margin-bottom:0;margin-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small)\">\u201cThe day they told me it came back, I remember it was the same thing. I just went to the bathroom, cried, came out, nothing more. The second time it came around, you know, I was 18, so that\u2019s also when I was just a little bit more aware of my life and everything going on,\u201d Ignon said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-1a4b1092ee5552c575f2cd6ff52d1921\" style=\"background-color:#ffffffcf;margin-top:0;margin-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);margin-bottom:0;margin-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small)\">That\u2019s because things were now more complicated for Ignon. She was about to take off to do a gap year in Europe before attending USC. Precautions had to be taken to preserve her fertility \u2014 something 13-year-olds rarely think about, but becomes a pressing reality for older teen patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-0d51ab99b657434b3512bd644d85e235\" style=\"background-color:#ffffffcf;margin-top:0;margin-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);margin-bottom:0;margin-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small)\">Ignon\u2019s trip to Europe was delayed, and she received chemotherapy treatment the second time around at Los Angeles Children\u2019s Hospital before going to New York with her mom for <span id=\"radiation\"><span class=\"bBlocksTextUnderline\">radiation<\/span><\/span> therapy to kill any remaining cancer cells and reduce the risk of another recurrence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-4bc578f1d339ee4c4578071759418b30\" style=\"background-color:#ffffffcf;margin-top:0;margin-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);margin-bottom:0;margin-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small)\">After the second time around, when Ignon was considered \u201ccured,\u201d she started dealing with a larger amount of mental health problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column has-background is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"background-color:#ffffffcf;padding-top:0;padding-bottom:0\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video aligncenter\"><video controls src=\"https:\/\/ascjcapstone.com\/spring-2025\/cjmorgan\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/IMG_6406-1.mov\"><\/video><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Ignon ringing the &#8220;Victory Bell&#8221; after finishing treatment for her relapse. But she always felt a sense of guilt when letting loose by going out with friends to drink or smoke. Although that was normal for everyone else her age, she was always faced with an overwhelming sense of shame. She knew she shouldn\u2019t be doing that \u2014 but she just wanted to feel normal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-faef2fe3bda5257adb3715658f3ff82f\" style=\"background-color:#ffffffcf;margin-top:0;margin-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);margin-bottom:0;margin-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small)\">\u201cThere\u2019s then another aspect of anxiety of what if the cancer comes back? I would feel so disappointed in myself because I would feel like it\u2019s my fault since I let myself go and had fun these past few years,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-51562aadc991fbd6a12ebdf1eb900e2a\" style=\"background-color:#ffffffcf;margin-top:0;margin-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);margin-bottom:0;margin-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small)\">For many childhood cancer survivors like Ignon, the anxiety of constantly wondering if the cancer will return never really goes away. And no matter how many times you hear otherwise, you can\u2019t help but wonder if it was somehow your fault. Even if it\u2019s not true, that thought lingers in the back of every survivor\u2019s mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-1c85cd354cf507ffb25a80547aa4c512\" style=\"background-color:#ffffffcf;margin-top:0;margin-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);margin-bottom:0;margin-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small)\">The depression and anxiety almost feel built-in after remission, yet there are no built-in resources to help survivors cope with the aftermath of having had childhood cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-4faa7a6b9adb7f50c4bc59805c078d80\" style=\"background-color:#ffffffcf;margin-top:0;margin-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);margin-bottom:0;margin-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small)\">Many survivors feel that a therapist should be integrated into treatment from the start.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-d9a247fd1696f3b07f61d7a241bed3f1\" style=\"background-color:#ffffffcf;margin-top:0;margin-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);margin-bottom:0;margin-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small)\">Michael Albrecht was diagnosed with stage 3 <span id=\"Ewing\"><span class=\"bBlocksTextUnderline\">Ewing<\/span><\/span> sarcoma when he was 14 years old. He never learned the cause, but jokes that he got cancer from square dancing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-d23e48c9ffa01ae398f4d139911c06d6\" style=\"background-color:#ffffffcf;margin-top:0;margin-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);margin-bottom:0;margin-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small)\">\u201cI got hit in the leg during square dancing, and I had this big bump. He was considered cancer-free until about three years later, when he relapsed in 2019 during his senior year of high school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-a046f3ff75447d860377a8b64cee7fe8\" style=\"background-color:#ffffffcf;margin-top:0;margin-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);margin-bottom:0;margin-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small)\">During his first round of treatment, Albrecht said there was so much support from his parents and community that he didn\u2019t fully grasp what was happening. But when the cancer returned and he was older, he became more anxious \u2014 not just about treatment, but about missing out on life milestones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-7cc313a3f913ef1b7a60d79919d66144\" style=\"background-color:#ffffffcf;margin-top:0;margin-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);margin-bottom:0;margin-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small)\">\u201cJust going through puberty makes one have all these imbalanced feelings that need to be talked about. So combining that with chemotherapy, not going to school, and seeing your peers like a normal student created a lot of FOMO [fear of missing out] in senior year because I was missing graduation and prom. It wasn\u2019t so much about the cancer as it was about how I was really missing out on life,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-86427ef9eff0015962187e096e83d73d\" style=\"background-color:#ffffffcf;margin-top:0;margin-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);margin-bottom:0;margin-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small)\">For a lot of childhood cancer patients, including myself, this is true. When you\u2019re a kid and going through treatment, it almost becomes normalized because you haven\u2019t yet experienced any memorable young adult milestones. However, when cancer comes back in high school, college, or early adulthood, patients often become more anxious \u2014 not just about the illness, but about falling behind in life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-fa7ed39bd98ccafded1e73b8afe197ca\" style=\"background-color:#ffffffcf;margin-top:0;margin-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);margin-bottom:0;margin-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small)\">After receiving treatment in 2019 and being considered \u201ccured,\u201d Albrecht relapsed a third time in 2021. Instead of chemotherapy, he underwent an autologous stem cell transplant, where healthy cells were taken from his blood and bone marrow and used to replace the damaged and diseased marrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-8fb76c8ecac04d892fbb21b27cdc073a\" style=\"background-color:#ffffffcf;margin-top:0;margin-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);margin-bottom:0;margin-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small)\">\u201cMy third time going through treatment, I definitely thought I was going to die,\u201d he said. \u201cIt was COVID at the time, and I started flunking online school because I thought I was dying, so I didn\u2019t even think it mattered.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-27272c178fb14f4e604b9c1d82199874\" style=\"background-color:#ffffffcf;margin-top:0;margin-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);margin-bottom:0;margin-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small)\">Albrecht wasn\u2019t worried about losing his hair or getting poked with an <span id=\"IV\"><span class=\"bBlocksTextUnderline\">IV<\/span><\/span> (Intravenous therapy) anymore. Now, he was worried about his longevity \u2014 starting a family, building a career, and having a future. At the time, Albrecht turned to his social worker to act as a therapist, since none was formally provided. He confided in her about what he was going through, helping to calm his nerves and guide him through yet another relapse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-305c31e0bc56e2846620708cabe9b3a4\" style=\"background-color:#ffffffcf;margin-top:0;margin-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);margin-bottom:0;margin-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small)\">\u201cIt was like hell. His treatment lasted about two and a half years \u2014 a routine that included transfusions, immunotherapy, and chemotherapy \u2014 before he was declared in remission. Miller recalls a moment during Luke\u2019s treatment when they were told the hospital had run out of one of his chemotherapy drugs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-ce931cf74a1fd3c640fd51870b441cfa\" style=\"background-color:#ffffffcf;margin-top:0;margin-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);margin-bottom:0;margin-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small)\">\u201cI was like, what do you mean, you\u2019re out of it?\u201d she said. \u201cUsually we\u2019d get a prescription of like six pills. You wish it was you instead of them,\u201d she said. \u201cBut I also was very understanding that I don\u2019t think I could have handled it as well as he did. I always pushed it to the side because I didn\u2019t want to think about it. I\u2019d rather make a cancer joke and play it off like I don\u2019t lie awake at night thinking what the hell did I do to deserve this. But I do. Because the truth is, there is no bell loud enough, not a hospital discharge date final enough, to end a childhood cancer patient&#8217;s journey.
