CONCLUSION

Modern dating is no picnic. And it’s certainly no Nora Ephron movie. So what is it?

“It’s like a mini-game,” said Alisa.

“It’s literally psychological torture,” said Brandy.

“It’s just a way to increase your social capital,” said Val.

One thing’s for sure: we’re all a little obsessed with it.

Maybe this obsession is all society’s fault, or maybe it’s our own fault because we’re just looking for a distraction from global warming and late stage capitalism. Or maybe Plato was right, and we are all half humans roaming around the Earth looking for our Soulmates.

Regardless of the reason, dating is here to stay. “And all we can really do is try to dismantle some of the structures in place and try to make dating a little more equitable,” said Roberson.

Upon writing this article, I’m more convinced than ever that love and romance and dating are important and smart things to think and write about.

A journalist once asked Nora Ephron why she only wrote about relationships and she responded: “Is there something else?”

I asked Roberson the same question.

“There’s hanging out with your homies,” said Roberson. “There’s doing work that’s meaningful to you. There’s helping other people… and there’s love. There really isn’t much else.”
