Overflow

Founded in 2010, Overflow is believed to have formed from a Bible study group. The name comes from Psalm 119:171, "May my lips overflow with praise," and is the group's mission statement, according to co-music director Hannah Reynolds.

USC's only Christian a cappella group, Overflow, rehearses twice a week in Kilgore Chapel at the university religious center. While faith is a fundamental component of Overflow, the group accepts people of all backgrounds and beliefs.

According to Reynolds, half of Overflow's repertoire is Christian music, and the genres of the other half fluctuate depending on the current members' interests. Currently, Overflow sings pop, musical theatre, and some jazz. "O Holy Night" and "King of Kings" are staples of the group's set.

Overflow puts on a performance at the end of each semester and is often invited by several churches to lead worship at the beginning of a service.

Overflow has recently begun attending Break it Down, a joint concert featuring non-competitive collegiate Christian a cappella groups. Last semester, the event was held at UC Berkeley and featured a cappella groups from USC as well as Berkeley, Stanford and UCLA.

"Not to say that other groups don't have community, but I think ours is highly appreciated by the members," Reynolds said. " Overflow members often come to rehearsals early and stay late just to hang out and chat.

Overflow takes the idea of the group being one big family to another level – currently, two members have family or extended family members who were once a part of Overflow.

When asked what prospective students should know before auditioning for Overflow, Reynolds shared that although they are a musical group, they prioritize the community component of their group with the goal of lifting each other up. Overflow ends each rehearsal with a prayer and worship song they sing together in a huddle.
