The Sirens
Founded in 1997, The Sirens are USC’s first and only all-women a cappella group. Known for its sisterhood, the group sings a variety of genres, including oldies, R&B, Pop and even sprinkles in Disney for fun.
Throughout the year, The Sirens perform at tailgates during Trojan Family Weekend and various gigs on and off campus. This past year, members of The Sirens serenaded customers at the Insomnia Cookies in the USC Village, in hopes of earning free cookies.
The Sirens recently celebrated their 25th anniversary. The group invited back their alumni for a reunion. The weekend consisted of brunches, dinner, as well as a performance. Current Sirens performed for the alumni and then sang alongside them. The alumni are committed to the group and to performing. One of the alumni is currently singing backup for Taylor Swift.
This past October, The Sirens toured in Boston performing at a member’s high school as well as with other a cappella groups in the Boston area including Berklee College of Music, MIT and Boston College. While on tour, in addition to performing with other groups, The Sirens explored many of the city’s highlights including Boston Seaport, college campuses and went apple picking.
In addition to their individual performances, The Sirens perform their Winter concert with The Trojan Men, USC’s only all-male a cappella group. “We have our Winter Concert with them and we do a few joint songs,” in addition to many on our own, Music Director Christina Azzi said.
The Sirens stream their concerts through Instagram so friends and family far away are also able to enjoy their performances.
The Sirens challenge themselves by sticking to a rule of only singing arrangements by current and former group members. “It’s an ambitious feat,” Azzi admits, “but that’s something we haven’t wanted to drop.”
In April, they hosted a riff-off where all USC a cappella groups were invited and 5 groups participated. This event was designed to foster the USC a cappella community.
Most recently, the Sirens performed their Spring concert on April 28. Some of their songs included: "Love On Top," "Talk Dirty," "I Say A Little Prayer," "Gravity" and a Reneé Rapp Mashup.
